Island Packers Trip to Santa Cruz Island

Sunday, August 10
We have a group reservation for an Island Packers trip to Santa Cruz Island on Sunday, August 10. You are likely to see great wildlife in the channel on the way over (superpods of Common Dolphins are practically guaranteed, seabirds, perhaps Humpback or Blue Whales). Island Packers has some great naturalists who can point out the highlights.
  • Depart Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM on boat to Prisoner’s Harbor, arrive 10:30 or 11:30 AM, depart the island at 4:00 PM to return to Ventura Harbor at 6:00 PM. We will need to arrive at the harbor by 8:15 AM, which means leaving UCSB by 7:30 AM.
  • Once we reach the island, you can do a hike on the Pelican Trail, guided by an Island Packers naturalist, or explore on your own. The island will be quite dry, but there is interesting wildlife and island biology/biogeography to learn about. (Adorable island foxes, a mini subspecies of gray foxes, are often seen in the campgrounds!).
  • You can also access the sand/cobblestone beach from the harbor.
  • If you rent a kayak in Ventura, Island Packers will stow it on the boat and unload it for you at the island. See http://www.islandpackers.com/WaterSports.html for more details
  • 25 spots are available
  • Trip preparation tips at http://www.islandpackers.com/DayTripPreparation.html. Bring lunch and plenty of water!
  • $54 cash, kids $41. First-come, first-served, but QBio students and TA's will get first priority for signups and for rides in the van. Please sign up and pay Maggie by August 1. See me in office 1228 or email qbioschool@kitp.ucsb.edu if you have questions.

Guadalupe Dunes Trip Sunday, July 27

On Sunday the 27th there will be an outing to the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, a nice way to experience wild northern Santa Barbara County without the inland heat!

We will meet at KITP at 9:45(?) to organize rides. It's approximately a 90-minute drive to the Dunes Center, where there are some natural history exhibits, maps, and an exhibit on the dunes' past as a movie set. We can explore the Dunes Center until people get their fill and then go on to Oso Flaco Lake. Parking at Oso Flaco is $5/car. From Oso Flaco Lake there is a 1.5 mile boardwalk that you can use to access the beach. The boardwalk has a spectacular view of a huge stretch of the dunes complex. This beach really is a walking and sightseeing beach, not a swimming beach--there is no lifeguard, and currents are strong. We can eat lunch, explore the dunes and beach, and return mid-afternoon.

Bring a sack lunch, water, sun protection, and a long-sleeved shirt or windbreaker (in case it's windy).

There is much, much more to explore in the dunes complex. Point Sal is a popular destination: http://dunescenter.org/visit-the-dunes/points-of-interest/
